Lesson 8: What Shall We Drink?

1. What are we admonished to be? 1 Peter 4:7

“Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober” 1 Thessalonians 5:6.

2. Why must we be sober? 1 Peter 5:8

Sober: Not drunk. Characterized by reason, sanity, or self-control; showing mental or emotional balance.

3. What does the Bible say will destroy sobriety? Proverbs 20:1

“Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.  At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder” Proverbs 23:31, 32.

4. What did the use of wine cause two priests to do? Leviticus 10:1

When the sanctuary was dedicated, God Himself sent fire to consume the sacrifice (Leviticus 9:24).  This was the holy or sacred fire that was to burn continually and from which the fire in the censors and to burn incense was to come (Exodus 30:9). Aaron’s sons used “strange fire” which they had kindled to burn incense in their censors in direct disobedience to God’s command.  They did so because they were drunk with wine.

5. God commanded that Aaron and his sons Ithamar and Eleazar not do what? Leviticus 10:9

6. Why was this command given? Leviticus 10:10

G. Joel 3:3

13. Who are we not to associate with? Proverbs 23:20

14. What did God have to say to those who serve alcohol to others? Habukkuk 2:15

Woe: great sorrow, grief, misery

“But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea” Matthew 18:6.

15. Did God ever change His prohibition against fermented wine and strong drink? Psalm 89:34

“For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed” Malachi 3:6.

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” Hebrews 13:8.

Since God has not changed and says that He will never change, His commands that we not use alcoholic beverages is still in effect today.

17. Jesus told us what will happen to the drunkards? Luke 12:45, 46

18. Would Jesus, who was God in the flesh, sin? Zephaniah 3:5

19. Did Jesus drink fermented wine? Luke 23:36

“And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar” Mark 24:36.

Jesus refused to use anything that would have altered His mental capacity and thinking.  Vinegar is, as the Bible margin and the dictionary state, sour wine.

John 2:1-11 records the story of the marriage feast in Cana where Jesus turned water into wine.  We know that God never changes; He is the same forever, and His word stands forever.  Therefore the wine that Jesus furnished at the feast was not fermented, but was the pure juice of grapes.  Jesus came to do the will of His Father (John 5:30) and would not have disobeyed God’s word by giving them fermented wine.

20. Will there be drunkards in heaven? Galatians 5:21

21. As we prepare for Christ’s second coming, what have we been told not to do? Romans 13:13

“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” 1 Peter 1:13.
